Abstract

This article analyzes the content moderation systems of digital platforms and the phenomenon of algospeak, with the aim of determining how this phenomenon relates to the freedom of expression of social media users. To achieve this, the study employed the deductive approach method, combined with the monographic procedure method and bibliographic and documentary research techniques. The methodology resulted in the division of the article into two parts: the first chapter presents an overview of content moderation systems on digital platforms, while the second addresses the relationship between algospeak and freedom of expression. Based on the study, it was found that content moderation systems are flawed and operate in an arbitrary (discretionary) manner, with algorithms possessing limited capacity to analyze the context of posts. Algospeak emerges as a reactive strategy and a tool of resistance used by users to assert their freedom of expression in the face of unjustly imposed sanctions. However, the phenomenon is controversial, as it can also be exploited to conceal inappropriate content, such as hate speech and misinformation. Therefore, it is necessary for big tech companies to improve their moderation systems so they can better interpret context and identify algospeak in genuinely harmful content, thus protecting freedom of expression and other fundamental rights.
