UNIFOR Law Review concludes 2025 with a dossier on democracy and Big Techs
The UNIFOR Law Review concludes its 2025 editorial year with the publication of its two regular issues and the thematic dossier “Democracy and Big Techs: War of Affects,” dedicated to the analysis of the relationships between technology, informational power, and democracy.
The dossier results from the submission process conducted between July and October 2025 and was organized by Professors Dr. José Luiz Quadros de Magalhães and Dr. Nélida Reis Caseca Machado.
The issue brings together 11 scholarly articles that examine the role of major digital platforms in shaping public debate, with an emphasis on the functioning of algorithms, the mediation of discourse, and the production of subjectivities in the digital environment.
The contributions address contemporary legal challenges arising from the expansion of digital technologies, discussing regulatory limits, impacts on fundamental rights, and the need for appropriate institutional responses to ongoing transformations. The analyses contribute to deepening the legal debate on digital governance, democracy, and awareness of the role of Big Techs.
The published articles highlight the complexity of the topic and indicate the need for continued research in the field. Accordingly, the Review announces that the discussion will be resumed in a new special issue scheduled for 2026, maintaining an interdisciplinary dialogue among law, technology, and democracy.
In closing its 2025 editorial activities, the UNIFOR Law Review extends its best wishes to the academic community and renews its invitation for new debates, research, and scholarly contributions throughout 2026.
