Abstract

Introduction: The report of pain is increasingly frequent due to the new habits of life of the modern man, from the decreasing of tolerance to suffering, from the extension of life and by the increasing information with chronic clinical conditions. Among chronic pain, the incidence of low back pain (LBP) is high, they do not fully recover and subsequently develop permanent pain symptoms. Although the causes of LBP are multifactorial, the studies show that it is related to etiological factors such as socio-demographic characteristics, daily life habits, physical and psychosocial factors. Objectives: To evaluate the effect of the stabilization of the exercises of solo Pilates Method and the Jacobson’s Relaxation Technique on the LBP, the functionality variables and the influence of these techniques on the beliefs and fears of these individuals. Methodology: It is a semi-experimental study of the pre and post-intervention type, in which 30 patients with LBP have participated. Patients were evaluated using a sociodemographic questionnaire, Visual Numerical Scale (NRS), Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) for low back pain. These questionaries were randomly assigned to two treatment groups Pilates Group (GP) and Relaxation Group (GR). Results: The GP showed a significant improvement of the pain in 12 sessions, both in resting and in movement; in FABQ showed significant improvement with 18 sessions. GR did not show significant improvement of the pain and FABQ, but it was self-reported improvement at the end of each session. In ODI, both grades did not show significant improvement, however, there was a reduction in the total score of each patient in the GP. Conclusion: The Pilates Method was effective and it showed a satisfactory improvement of the pain in patients with LBP and also showed a significant improvement in beliefs and fear in these patients.
