Introduction: the skin, the largest organ in the human body, performs essential protective functions. However, ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of the main aggressions to which it is continually exposed. Objective: This study aims to investigate the evolution of photoprotection over time and review progress to understand the current state of knowledge on the subject. Method: This is a narrative review, conducted by means of research on four data bases. The descriptors are distributed in three main thematic areas: sun exposure, photoprotection and photoprotective products and behavior and fitness. Results: a line of evolution was built that shows a transition from rudimentary practices to strategies based on scientific evidence, accompanying sociocultural changes and public health demands. Are elaborated thematic categories opening current and emerging strategies in photoprotection; behaviors and knowledge of the population about photoprotection; technological innovations and photoprotection formulations; education and interventions in photoprotection. Conclusion: a historical analysis of photoprotection evidences a trajectory marked by regulatory, technological and scientific advances that transform empirical practices into effective prevention strategies against the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation. Finally, the evaluation of current photoprotection strategies is essential to strengthen preventive practices, increase the use of sunscreens and minimize the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation on public health.
