Abstract

Introduction: Respiratory diseases (RD) are considered one of the main conditions that cause morbidity in humans. They can be classified into: infectious and non-infectious infectious. They present a diversity in the forms of manifestations, covering all age groups. They are responsible for 8% of all deaths in developed countries and 5% in developing countries, responsible for most hospital admissions. Objective: To characterize and compare the number of morbidity and mortality caused by respiratory diseases in Brazil in the years 2019 to 2020 by the database of the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System. Method: This is na epidemiological, descriptive and quantitative study. To survey the number of hospitalizations for respiratory diseases, data from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System were used. The data were presented by means of absolute numbers and relative frequency. For statistical analysis the chi-square test and the t-test were used. Results: There was a significant difference between the numbers of hospitalizations in the proposed periods. The number of hospitalizations for respiratory diseases in both years, 2019 and 2020 was not associated with any of the variables analyzed. This study showed a significant drop in the numbers of hospitalizations for respiratory diseases in the year 2020 compared to the year 2019.
