In the last decades, understading mammary gland inflamation in livestock, kwown as mastitis, has become more relevant. A disease caused by bacteria from Streptococcus and Staphylococcus genres; coliforms like Escherichia coli; amongst other novel etiological agents. It is an infection responsible for increasing losses in dairy farming and industry due to milk quality loss, production reduction and an associated high SCC, which leads to a higher outgo related to antibiotic treatment and milk waste. In Brazil, there is a vast antimicrobial market directed to mastitis treatment, with diverse efficiency in mastitis resolution. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics is a constant concern that sometimes is neglected. Also, animal handling, with proper prophylactic actions such as pre-dipping and post-dipping, as well as cleaning and disinfection of farm environments, is crucial. All factors, preventive or curative, are important for the correct resolution of mastitis in a dairy farm. It is especially important to understand the etiology and production reality of each farm, in order to define an individualized protocol for each situation.
